How Your Summer Eating Habits and Diet May Be Affecting Your Teeth

When the summer sun is shining, it's easy to reach for cold treats, refreshing drinks and backyard BBQ favorites. But while summer is full of fun and flavor, it can also take a toll on your teeth if you're not mindful of what you're eating and drinking.

At Alliance Dental Care, we want to help you make the most of the season, without sacrificing your oral health. Here’s how your summer diet may affect your smile and what you can do to keep it healthy all season long.

Summer Foods That Are Great for Your Teeth

Some seasonal favorites support your smile. Here are a few to embrace:

  • Crunchy Fruits and Veggies: Fresh summer produce like apples, carrots, celery and cucumbers naturally clean your teeth and stimulate saliva, which helps neutralize acids and wash away bacteria.
  • Cheese and Yogurt: Picnic-friendly and delicious, cheese and yogurt are rich in calcium and phosphates that strengthen enamel. Bonus: they’re low in sugar and can even help balance the mouth’s pH.
  • Watermelon and Water: Staying hydrated is key! Watermelon has a high-water content and helps promote saliva flow, while drinking plenty of plain water throughout the day flushes out food particles and keeps your mouth healthy.

Summer Treats to Enjoy in Moderation

We’re not here to ruin your fun, but it’s good to be aware of how certain summer staples can impact your teeth!

  • Sugary Snacks and Ice Cream: Sweets and frozen treats are a staple of summer, but they feed cavity-causing bacteria and can lead to enamel erosion. If you indulge, rinse with water and wait 30 minutes before brushing.
  • Sugary Drinks and Sports Beverages: From sodas to lemonades and even some sports drinks, these beverages are packed with sugar and acid. Sipping throughout the day bathes your teeth in decay-causing ingredients.
  • Sticky BBQ Sauces: Delicious? Yes. Sticky? Also, yes. Sugary sauces can cling to your teeth long after your meal. Rinse with water and brush as soon as possible after eating.

Quick Tips for a Summer-Friendly Smile

  • Snack Smart: Reach for fruits, cheese, or nuts instead of chips or cookies.
  • Hydrate Often: Water is your mouth’s best friend in the heat.
  • Brush and Floss: Twice a day is a must, especially with more frequent snacking.
  • Don’t Chew Ice: It may cool you down, but it can crack your teeth.
  • Schedule a Cleaning: Summer is the perfect time to stay on top of your oral health.

Your diet plays a big role in your dental health—and summertime is no exception. By choosing the right foods and being mindful of your habits, you can enjoy the season and protect your smile at the same time.
